Captain’s Corner – July ‘10
I said last time I wrote – how time flies – and at the fear of repeating myself – it continues to do so.
Here we are well into July, the nights are already pulling in and Captain’s Day has been and gone. I hope all of those that played enjoyed themselves and my special congratulations go to Kevin Morrall, who won the day with a net 67 (after a countback) from Brian Elliott. I saw Brian last week and he told me he “blew up” on the 15th. I never heard the bang!!
A special thank you also to all those who attended my evening event. Despite the counter attraction of football – we had a guest list of 50 and from the feedback I have received – the evening was a raging success.
In some ways I’m glad that Captain’s Day has happened because according to my predecessor, Peter Jolliffe, the Captain’s golf improves after the event. Given that upto then my best Saturday return was in the 3 club challenge – things couldn’t really get any worse. But fingers crossed – his wise words are a nearly true – I have now hit buffer zone 3 times running!!
As you will have seen from John Waite’s latest blog – the course is suffering from almost drought like conditions. I don’t remember ever seeing it quite so brown. That said, John and his team are doing a fantastic job in maintaining the quality of the greens. Putting on them is a pleasure and they are also taking a ball. What more could we ask for?
Although “brown” – the course is yielding some good scores – I don’t think anyone has dipped into the 60’s yet – but I have seen a couple of 70’s and many other scores at or around par.
One of the 70’s won the Scratch Cup – congratulations to Kevin Parker on winning and also on getting his handicap down to scratch in recent weeks.
What odd’s on the course record being threatened in the next few weeks?
It is also nice to see our Juniors thriving – and allow me a bit of indulgence, because one of them is my son! They remain unbeaten in the Junior League and look odds on certainties to be in the final play-offs. A number of them are also playing for the scratch team – and whilst they are finding the step up a bit difficult they are gaining valuable experience that will stand them in good stead for future years. Despite giving up plenty of shots , Alex Mook has been victorious and Ben Joy managed a half on debut.
We are also seeing an ever increasing number of Junior’s attending the get-togethers on a Saturday afternoon. Numbers are hitting 20 on a regular basis and again bodes well for Scarthingwell’s future. Big kudos to David, Irene and Brian.
The next “biggie” is President’s Day on July 24th – and looking at the start sheet – it should be another full house.
Although not a major golfing event – please put 27th August in your diary. The ladies are organising a Pig Racing Evening and as much support as possible would be fantastic.
You may also have seen the notices up about a change in date of Invitation Day. It is now 4th September. Unfortunately this switch of dates was outside our control. My apologies to those who had already issued invitations and made arrangements. I hope your guests will still be able to attend on the new date.
There have also been notices about the Dress Code. Can I please ask that you make yourself fully aware of the club’s policy and adhere to it whenever you go out on the course. Thank you.
Yours in Golf
