LADIES NEWS & EVENTS
Newsletter Update August 2010
Hello ladies of Scarthingwell,
August is a busy time for extending a welcome to visitors, starting with the Invitation Day on the 4th. A couple of heavy showers tried to upset the competition but we all got round and some even came in with good scores! This event is lovely because we get to invite friends to play a social competition and have good food at the end of it. Competition results:
1st Jean Marshall/Bet Allison and guests.
2nd Maggs Katz/Pauline Dawkins and guests.
Longest Drive won by Pauline Dawkins.
Two nearest the pin competitions were won by guests.
My committee and I are just getting over the marathon day which is the Ladies AM AM! We had a great turn out but with extending the tee times to 9 minutes the day seemed much longer this year. However, I think it made for a more relaxed atmosphere around the club house and on the course. Highlight of the day has to be the wonderful compliments about the scoring system painstakingly built by Mary Rose over the past year or so. Sue and June were her able assistants processing all relevant data and checking that ladies had up-to-date handicaps. The team was completed with Anne and Edite keeping everything else ticking over in the clubhouse and a goodly number of members serving excellent home-baked refreshments at the half way house. We hear that some visitors only come for the cakes! Competition results:

Very well done to Pauline Dawkins who equalled the course record in the August mid week Stableford, I’m sure she will work hard at beating it in the next few competitions.
Good luck to the ladies playing in the Friendly matches over the next month.
John Waite and his team came up trumps over the month with the course preparation and we had some very positive comments from visitors and members alike. Ladies continue to be amazed at the excellent developments on the course, particularly if they have not played here for a period of years.
Thank you to Tony Wells who has been our Mr Starter over the season and done an admirable job. I know he enjoys the chat, especially to people who return year on year, but he has stood on the 1st tee in some nasty weather conditions and for that we offer our grateful thanks.
We hope the Pig Race night will be a success next Friday, 27th August as we are trying to bring different social events to the members and the clubhouse. Any suggestions will be welcome.
Diary date - the Exchange Day with Oakdale is on Tuesday 21st September. Information and menu choices are on the Notice Board. If anyone requires a lift to the course please contact the committee and we will try and sort everyone out.
Happy Golfing

The Mixed AM AM was played on a bright but very windy Sunday, which reflects the relatively low scoring compared with last year.
The Ladies Section received some very favourable comments from attendees about the course, the hospitality and friendliness of the club. This is very pleasing as a lot of people work for a long time to put the event together.

After a lean month on the competition front we are back to a full range of honours board, medal and Stableford fixtures. Good luck ladies. We will probably be arranging some fun competitions with the Junior section over the Summer holidays so please watch the Notice Board for details.
Our next Event will be Ladies Invitation Day, Wednesday 4th August. Hurry if you want to enter as the list is up and tee times are filling fast. Usual format of teams of 4 with one member, one guest to score on all holes except a couple where all to count! Just to add a bit of interest of course.
Ladies AM AM on 18th August is almost full which is good news, it’s wonderful that some teams come back to us year after year. We will, as ever, be asking for baking for the Half Way House and volunteers to meet and greet our visitors.
The date for the Pig Racing night has been agreed and will be staged on Friday 27th August, all details on posters in the clubhouse. We are now selling ownership of the runners and hoping to attract sponsors for the races. Tickets are on sale at £4.50 which includes a “pie and pea” supper and can be obtained from the Ladies Committee.
Later in the year, Thursday 4th November, we will have a social evening which involves:
a) Golf clothing sale. Items supplied from golf clothing manufacturers will be available to try on and buy on the night.
b) Stall of scarves, handbags and accessories.
c) Manicure and nail care treatments by trainees from a Leeds College of Beauty
d) Possible cookery demonstration marrying easy seasonal canapés and wines. Obviously these will have to be tested by attendees!
More details of this event to follow in the Autumn.
